No Need to Compete: Trafalgar’s Lasting Impact on Confidence
Born and raised in the GTA, Dana Abossi’s path to Trafalgar Castle School began when her family settled in Stouffville. Her father worked in Oshawa, and it was due to that connection that she first learned about Trafalgar. She joined the School in Grade 7, proudly donning yellow as a member of the Hare house. Dana remained at Trafalgar until her graduation in 2014.
When asked about her favourite memories of Trafalgar, Dana reflects fondly on house activities, camp trips to Kilkoo, and “the little things”; like gathering in the dining hall with friends or passing teachers in the halls. Returning for reunions and galas has only reinforced the warmth of those memories and the lasting sense of community that Trafalgar instilled in her.
During her years at Trafalgar, Dana immersed herself in the community, taking on leadership positions that shaped her confidence and character. She served as a House Captain, Community Service Prefect, and was an active member of Peer Mediation, Me to We, and community outreach. While athletics weren’t her primary focus, her leadership roles gave her a strong sense of responsibility and connection to her peers. She describes her time at Trafalgar as “one of the most amazing experiences of her life.”
After leaving the Castle, Dana pursued a Bachelor of Science at Western University before heading to the Caribbean to study medicine at Ross University. Her medical journey took her to Barbados for two years, followed by two more years of clinical training in New York City. Today, she is completing her residency in psychiatry in New York, carving out a career dedicated to mental health and wellness.
When asked what advice she would give to her fellow alumnae, Dana emphasizes the importance of gratitude and giving back. “It’s important to remember your roots and where you came from. Think back to when you were in the younger grades and all the teachers, board members, and alumnae who made it possible for you to have these opportunities. Giving back ensures that the current students can continue to experience the same opportunities we were so fortunate to have.”
Now, nearly a decade since her graduation, Dana reflects on the lasting impact that Trafalgar had on her life. “You never felt like the odds were against you because Traf taught you that there is no ceiling that you are limited by,” she shares.
