Alumnae Spotlight: Meghan Patrick

Meghan Patrick: Her Journey from Trafalgar Castle School to Pursuing Music Dreams

Since graduating from Trafalgar Castle School in 2005, Meghan Patrick has forged a remarkable career in music, embodying resilience, authenticity, and determination. A back-to-back CCMA Female Artist of the Year with 18 CMA Ontario Awards to her name, Meghan has captivated audiences with her soul-baring storytelling and electrifying performances. Her journey from a small-town girl in Bowmanville, ON, to a Nashville-based country music star is a testament to her passion and perseverance.

Meghan’s love for music blossomed during her time at Trafalgar Castle School. As a student, she co-founded her first band called The Sirens, alongside classmates Hill, Kit, and Natalie. Supported by teachers like Mr. Southwell and a dedicated practice space in the Bird Tower, she developed her performance skills and confidence. She fondly recalls her time in the School’s musicals, including playing a role in Jesus Christ Superstar, and participating in house events and air bands, with Carter House holding a special place in her heart.

“Trafalgar taught me resilience and gave me the confidence to speak my mind,” Meghan shares. “It was a safe environment that allowed me to grow as a leader and performer.”

After graduating, Meghan’s musical journey took her to McGill University to study opera, though she quickly realized her heart wasn’t in it. Pivoting to jazz, she joined the New Group Orchestra and honed her craft. Meghan eventually transferred to Humber College, where she joined a bluegrass ensemble and explored her love for Southern rock and modern country music—genres that felt natural for a small-town girl.

“Growing up in Bowmanville, country music and southern rock were always around me,” she explains. “When I started writing and performing, it was a natural fit.”

Returning to Bowmanville after college, Meghan toured Canada with a group of musicians before deciding to focus on securing a record deal. With her parents’ support—and her father’s candid advice to face the struggles of the music industry — Meghan worked tirelessly, juggling various jobs while pursuing her dream.

Meghan’s perseverance paid off when she signed her first record deal, cementing her place in the music industry. Her debut album, Grace & Grit, won multiple awards, and The Greatest Show On Dirt showcases her evolution as an artist. “This work comes from my soul,” Meghan says. “It’s deeply personal, and it’s a way to connect with people who might be going through similar experiences.”

Meghan credits her strong support system, including her husband and her team, with helping her navigate the challenges of the industry. “Hearing ‘no’ or ‘not yet’ is tough, but having people who believe in me keeps me going.”

Reflecting on her journey, Meghan advises current Trafalgar students not to rush into defining their paths. “Take the time to figure out who you are and what you’re passionate about,” she encourages. “It’s okay to pivot and try new things—life is a journey.”

She emphasizes the importance of resilience, determination, and finding a supportive community. “The lessons I learned at Trafalgar about leadership, confidence, and perseverance have been invaluable in my career.”

Meghan remains connected to her Trafalgar roots through social media and friendships. Currently, she’s working on a docuseries that chronicles her life and career, and in October 2024, she released a new album called Golden Child. Her proudest moments include headlining her first Canadian tour and crafting the docuseries, which allows her to share her authentic story with fans.

While looking to the future, Meghan hopes to inspire more Trafalgar students to chase their dreams and celebrate their individuality. “Trafalgar Castle fosters strong, independent women,” she says. “I hope to see more graduates embracing their uniqueness and making their mark on the world.”
