Embracing Opportunities at Trafalgar Castle School: Stephanie Summers and Daughter Victoria
At Trafalgar Castle School, we celebrate the remarkable journeys of our alumnae and the legacies they create. Stephanie Summers, Class of 1995, is one such alumna whose path from reluctant student to Head Prefect serves as an inspiring story of growth, leadership, and opportunity. Today, she watches her daughter, Victoria (Tory), Grade 10, embrace her own Trafalgar experience.
Stephanie’s journey at Trafalgar did not begin as an enthusiastic one. Initially resistant to attending the school, she agreed to enroll only at the insistence of her parents, who wanted her to have access to more opportunities. She was determined to remain uninvolved in extracurricular activities—until a pivotal moment changed everything.
The past Director of Athletics Jan Campbell, and Stephanie’s advisor, approached her with a request to be part of the school’s soccer team which was short on players. Reluctantly, Stephanie agreed to play—on one condition—she would only be the goalie. That decision marked the beginning of an unforgettable and transformative experience for Stephanie at Trafalgar. She quickly became immersed in student life, volunteering on committees, playing sports, and eventually taking on leadership roles. By Grade 12, she had embraced everything the school had to offer and was named Head Prefect.
Reflecting on her time at Trafalgar, Stephanie recalls the cherished Big Sister-Little Sister program. Her own “Little Sister” was none other than Ms. Karen May, the school’s current Director of Athletics. “The program helped build a strong sense of connection and sisterhood among students,” Stephanie shares. “It made younger students feel welcomed and created an environment of inclusion, warmth, and support.”
Another standout memory for Stephanie was Experience Week—now known as Beyond the Castle—which offered hands-on learning beyond the classroom. “It was an amazing experience to try new sports, visit museums, and learn in a different way with classmates.”
When asked what lasting impact did the school have on her life, Stephanie said, “Trafalgar shaped me into the strong, outspoken leader I am today. It built my confidence in public speaking and encouraged me to share my opinions.” Stephanie credits the school’s small, tight-knit community with helping students step out of their comfort zones and thrive in a supportive environment. “At Trafalgar, you can’t hide—you know your classmates, your teachers know you, and you’re given so many opportunities to try new things. It’s okay to fail and discover your strengths here.”
Continuing the Legacy: Victoria’s Experience
Stephanie wanted her daughter, Victoria (Tory), to experience Trafalgar’s nurturing and opportunity-filled environment. “I initially hoped she would start in Grade 9, but she agreed to give it a try for one year. Now, she’s in Grade 10 and thriving.”
Though Tory’s experience is her own, the core values of Trafalgar remain the same. “The message is clear—we want her to explore, take risks, and discover her passions,” added Stephanie.
Since her time as a student, Stephanie has seen Trafalgar evolve in exciting ways while staying true to its core mission. “The uniforms are a little more modern, and I love that the school is investing in the Fitness and Well-Being Centre, as physical fitness is so important, but the heart of the school, the supportive community and the encouragement to seize opportunities has remained unchanged.”
For Stephanie, mentorship played a key role in her development, and she hopes Tory finds the same support. “Ms. Campbell was a huge influence on me, and now my ‘Little Sister,’ Ms. May is now leading the athletics program. It’s amazing to see the continuity. It’s so important to have an advisor or teacher who believes in you and helps guide your path. At Trafalgar, you’re not just one of thousands of students—you’re known, supported, and encouraged,” said Stephanie. “That’s what makes Trafalgar special.”
As Trafalgar Castle School celebrates its 150th anniversary, Stephanie believes its lasting impact comes from the confidence it instills in its students. “Trafalgar gives young women access to excellence and empowers them to take initiative. It pushes students outside their comfort zones and fosters resilience, leadership, and independence.”
“If I could give Tory one piece of motherly advice, it would be to try everything. What’s the worst that could happen? Go for every opportunity,” she said. As a competitive skier, Tory already embodies the spirit of perseverance, and her mother hopes she continues to embrace new experiences.
In closing, Trafalgar Castle School gave Stephanie the confidence to try things she never imagined – from becoming Head Prefects, to living in boarding and making lifelong friends who she’s still in contact with today. Stephanie’s willingness to embrace new experiences has extended beyond her school years. “I just auditioned for The Great Canadian Baking Show! Trafalgar taught me to take chances—so why not go for it?”
We are proud to celebrate Stephanie Summer’s journey and her continued connection to Trafalgar Castle School through her daughter, Tory. Their story is a testament to the enduring impact of a Trafalgar education and the opportunities it continues to provide generations of young women.
