Alumnae Spotlight: Elaine Godwin

Fitness and Well-Being Centre: Staying Active and Healthy

Ontario Ladies’ College (OLC) was the place where Class of 1958 alumna Elaine (Westheuser) Godwin (pictured left with her son David) tried a variety of sports and activities. “OLC offered so many sports for students to experience, and I tried everything from gymnastics to ballet to badminton and team sports such as basketball and volleyball. I also earned my Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross for swimming at OLC,” said Elaine. “It’s so important for students to be influenced by sports and fitness at a young age – this becomes the foundation for staying active and healthy through life.”

Elaine and her late husband Tom, a Cardiologist, raised their four sons in Surrey, British Columbia on a working farm. “The farm kept us busy and active, and it also offered a connection to nature with a forest, salmon spawning stream and 1.5-acre pond and was an amazing place to live and raise our family.”

“OLC was a constant in my life – it was my home from Grade 6 to 13 and provided me with a great education. As a former Head of Athletics and Maxwell House it’s my pleasure to give to the building of Trafalgar Castle School’s Fitness and Well-Being Centre because I believe in being an advocate for good physical health.”

Elaine’s generous leadership gift of over $100,000 is part of the nearly $1 million already raised towards the School’s $2 million goal for a new Fitness and Well-Being Centre. Located beside the gym, the new building will provide a multi-use space where every student can build and maintain their physical fitness, cardio health, as well as their well-being in a tranquil and rejuvenating environment. As part of our commitment to students’ health, this year’s Annual Fund goal is to raise $200,000 which will be directed to this important project. “No amount is too small to give. Consider making a gift as a way to say thank you and remember the sports and activities you participated in while at the school.”

“Having facilities that provide state-of-the-art equipment and space that fosters students’ growth is vital to providing an atmosphere where students will enjoy spending time and looking after their physical fitness which promotes a healthy lifestyle.”
