Congratulations to Trafalgar student McKenna who was presented with the Blake Garvey Memorial Award of Appreciation on November 25. This award is given to a community member each year that has gone above and beyond promoting mental health and recovery in Durham Region. McKenna’s mom shares, “She was very proud as members of Durham Mental Health Services presented the plaque in person to her, and also excited to join in on a virtual presentation with community members and members of the Garvey Family. She was able to express her gratitude for the award, and to thank those that have taken the time to educate her on the needs within our community.”
Since McKenna started The Penny Pack initiative 3 years ago she has raised over $17,000 in funds and product donations which has allowed for the collection of over 15,000 personal hygiene care and comfort items. In total 1500 packs have been assembled. In 2020, 500 Penny Packs have been provided to Durham Mental Health Services, Cornerstone Durham and 400 packs specifically designed for children and teens have been delivered to Durham Children’s Aid Society to assist with their growing needs at this time.
Congratulations McKenna and thank you for all you’re doing to help make our community a better place!
